My kid turned 11 last week and, so far in life, she is pretty damn awesome at everything she does. She’s practically top of her class, she’s just been invited to join the swim squad, she got a distinction in her first guitar exam and the other day a mum I don’t know told me that her son always says she’s the kindest kid in the class. I’m so flipping proud of her. It’s as if she got the best bits of the two of us. I love her quiet confidence, I love that she cares about other people’s feelings and I love the fact that she’ll try her best at everything she does without wanting attention for it. It is hard being a mum though because no one lives in vacuum. However good she is, there is always someone better (in her case it’s a girl in her class/swim club who is crazy good at everything - and I mean everything!) and there will always be those who take advantage of her kind and sensitive nature. My hope for her is that she is able to appreciate how amazing she is and that her quiet confidence continues to grow. Ultimately I just want her to be happy with herself and what she chooses to do with her life. So far, i’m optimistic.
