i called the hospital about an hour ago, although to be honest i wasn't expecting to find anything out because i'm not next of kin (or even a close friend for that matter). the midwife confirmed that she wasn't able to tell me anything but then said "hang on" and a few seconds later she put the husband on the phone. things had been even worse than we had thought. L had ruptured her womb in two places and had serious internal bleeding. luckily they operated in time and both mother and baby boy are, for the moment, stable. i almost threw up with relief. maybe hoping and praying actually worked after all.

this probably isn't the appropriate place to talk about this but at 5am i have no where else to turn. it's been a bad night. we met up with our antenatal group to have a tour of Bath hospital and then we all went for drinks to a pub in the village where the cg and i live. one of the women in the group, who lives in the next village to us, had left her car in our driveway and got a lift with us to the hospital. she was driven home by her husband who works in Bath and they stopped to pick up her car on the way home. we waited in our car while she moved hers out of our drive. one minute she was walking towards her car, the next she was on the floor. nobody saw what happened but she told us she had tripped and hit the ground with her stomach and was in serious pain. the woman was 38 weeks pregnant. the cg immediately called an ambulance and her husband and i sat on the ground with her and tried to keep her from passing out. she was in so much pain she couldn't move. eventually the ambulance came and the medics told her husband to go home and get her maternity notes. i said i would go in the ambulance with her and the cg would follow us. at the hospital they checked the babys heartbeat and it seemed fine but the woman was white as a sheet and kept almost losing consciousness. when her husband arrived the cg and i were asked to leave so we went to the waiting room and said we would just wait a while and make sure everything was ok. her husband came out and thanked us for our help and, since we hardly know the people and things seemed to be ok, we took this as our cue to leave them to it. we got home at about 11.15pm and to be honest we were both quite shocked and shaken. half an hour later we got news that things weren't going well. there were concerns that the woman had internal bleeding and they decided to do an immediate c-section with a general anaesthetic. i can't even start to go into why the general anaesthetic thing is such a major deal but it is. anyway, that was the last news we had and since then i've been trying unsuccessfully to calm down and try and sleep. i don't know if and when we will hear anything. it's not like we are close friends, in fact we had to check what their surname was when we arrived at the hospital, but i just hope and pray that mum and baby are doing fine. i honestly don't know how i will cope if they aren't.
