we've just got back from seeing serenity for the second time. i was going to hold out for a few days before i suggested seeing it again but the cg, who's not even a big firefly fan, wanted to go. i can honestly report that it just gets better. they have to make a sequel.

Paul Ens, the Director of Lucas Online at Lucasfilm, talks Serenity at StarWars.com.
"In this blog, I'm Trying to Like Joss Whedon, I expressed some hesitations on my part about Firefly.
Since writing that entry, I've finished watching the rest of the series on DVD and have seen "Serenity" in theaters.
I'll admit it... I was wrong to doubt.
If you're a fan of Star Wars, you really owe it to yourself to check out the Serenity movie. Unless, of course, you don't like adventure, excitement, laughter and fun.
There were some bumpy parts, parts that felt a little small screen, and a handful of places that count on prior knowledge, but man... I don't recall ANYONE having made such an attempt at the swashbuckling space western since 1977. Plus, this film is infused with humor and it took some serious, serious risks that made the last act far more impactful than one would expect.
I'll take back the "everyone is Han Solo" comment too. Writing intelligent characters is very, very hard... and it's done well here. The dialect adds extra layers and enjoyment.
My main complaint? I love the theme song from the TV show! It's the reason I was willing to keep watching episodes. I had to wait until the very end of the credits to get a hint of it in a somber-ish accoustic guitar rendition. I know there were great reasons not to put it up front, but I'd have been grateful for the theme to appear in the score now and again.
Well done, Joss. You've earned a new fan."

5 random reviews that suggest you should be going to see SERENITY this weekend:
"So, does it do the business? Well, this reviewer doesnt award five stars lightly, nor out of blind devotion to the genre. Serenity happens to be an insanely exciting, back-to-basics vision of the future. Its highly effective guerrilla marketing campaign, coupled with its delivery of the goods, could potentially make it the sleeper hit of 2005."
"Serenity is still taut, immersive, and alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, a well-balanced blend of whooping Wild West action and space opera. If it has trouble standing on its own, that's just because it's carrying out the full promise of a terrific series, which it does with reckless brio."
"You can see how "Firefly," the short-lived TV show that provided the basis for "Serenity," could have gotten addictive if given the chance. The movie is a spirited mix of the familiar and the futuristic, of fast-paced chase scenes and butt-kicking brawls, of witty banter and well-drawn characters."
"The film, Serenity, shoots adrenaline into the heart of a genre plagued with wooden dialogue (recent Star Wars films) and ponderous opening sequences (all Star Trek movies). Whedon, whose writing earned an Oscar nod for Toy Story, delivers much-needed humor and surprising soul to a sci-fi movie."
"Fun, action-packed, and full of bizarre future-Mandarin curses, Serenity is sure to please anyone who likes adventure stories with brains."

wow. no really. wow. i have to go back and see it again. soon. it was like an elongated, super exciting episode of the tv show but a million times better. if they don't make a sequel i'm going to be so god damn pissed. jewel staite was there...we almost bumped into each other on the way to the washroom before the movie. i wonder what it's like to watch yourself on a big screen with a cinema full of people who love love love your character.

once we'd established that he wasn't having an affair the cg told me that he bought me the ipod because his business meeting went really well plus it makes him happy to see me excited. i didn't mention that it would have been at least few bucks cheaper to have sex with me than buy me an ipod. everyone at work has ipod-envy. i don't blame them. it's so small and lovely and the sound quality is amazing. i'm a total bass freak and its the perfect bassiness.
as if i wasn't getting enough joy already, in a couple of hours i will be seeing serenity. i am happy happy happy. i'm also hungry so i think i'll go and find some food.
