when i got into work today (tired and late) i found the door locked and a strange woman waiting outside. the strange woman was a new temp and the the door was locked because the person who trains new temps was off sick. so, despite the fact that i could really do without speaking to anyone first thing in the morning, it was down to me to show the new temp the ropes. unable to find the key to keep the door unlocked i propped it open with a metal bin. the bin fell over 3 times before i gave up on that idea. i then spent about 10 minutes trying to open the switchboard by following some typed instructions i found in a binder. i'm much more of a "press every button until something happens" kind of person than an instruction follower but with a combination of both i managed to get the phones in working order. there are still issues like where we collect our mail and how to page with the switchboard to work out but i decided to let the temp loose on the whole thing. "call me if you need any help" i offered and we both smiled because we both knew that my help would be a fat lot of good.
