the first single i ever bought was the cutter by echo and the bunnymen. i just had to check what year it was released. it was 1983. i bought it from W.H.Smith. i was 13, it was the first time i had gone into town on my own with a friend (that friend being kay W, the cleverest girl in school). on the way into town (which was about 30 minutes walk) i got slapped in the face and called a slut by some girl i didn't know for wearing an ankle bracelet and some guys i went to school with sprayed us with what we didn't realise was invisible ink. i was one of the popular kids back then. god knows what would have happened on that walk if i hadn't been! my music taste back then should have told me i was going to be a little different. i was the probably the only person in our town that bought that single. listening to it now on the CD that the cg bought me for my birthday i'm thinking that it is a very good song. i don't remember which single kay bought but i bet she isn't listening to that band right now. i have no idea where she is or what she is doing. there was gossip about her parents going nuts because at 15 they caught her having sex with a guy who lived on my estate (i can't remember his name) and then she had a whole anorexia thing going on and then she was devastated by a B in a sea of A's in her exam results and then i think she went to Oxford (the top university in england). if only she had been into echo and the bunnymen she could have ended up like me :)
